Jane C. Higginbotham

Our wonderful and loving mother, Jane C. Higginbotham, passed away peacefully at our home on January 19, 2023, at the age of 89. She is survived by her sister, Jessie Neil Custred Prescott (Cecil); her daughter, Elizabeth Higginbotham Smith (Steven); her daughter, Charlotte Higginbotham Monk (Tom); her son, Stephen Douglas Higginbotham; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Jane was born on June 14, 1933, and was preceded in death by her parents, William Milton Custred & Nellie Corn Custred; her brother William Milton Custred, Jr.; and her beloved husband, George Milton Higginbotham. In 1952 Jane graduated from Ensley High School. After graduation, she started working as a secretary for TCI Fairfield Works in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1955, Jane married George Higginbotham at Hunter St., Baptist Church in Birmingham Alabama. Shortly after getting married, she focused more on raising a family than her work at TCI Fairfield Works. Later she also took on the task of managing George’s law office and did so for over 45 years. While working at the law office, she would help George with his clients, cases, genealogy, and class reunions. Her help with the 1951 Bessemer class reunions was so instrumental that the entire 1951 Bessemer Class voted to make Jane an honorary graduate of their class. For everyone that came by the law office, they would always see her smiling face and feel her concern and patience. If people stayed around the office long enough, they would hear her say many different things such as “I swanny” and “oh my stars”. Jane and George had a long and loving marriage of over 61 years until George unfortunately passed away. She will be remembered for her love of Alabama Football, sunglasses, and margaritas. She was very loved and will be missed terribly. She will always hold a special place in our hearts. A viewing is scheduled for Thursday, January 26, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home in Bessemer, Alabama. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Afterward she will be laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum, 600 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Birmingham, Alabama 35211.
