Medrith Glenn "Sonny" Veitch

MEDRITH GLENN “SONNY” Veitch, passed away Thursday morning, November 7, 2013, at the age of eighty four (84) years. He was born July 27, 1929. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty two (62) years, Joann Murchison Veitch; his parents, Henry McCarter and Lelia Berryhill Veitch; his sisters, Mary Veitch Smith and Marjorie Veitch Curren; his son in law, Gary Jackson; and his special nephew, Kenneth Curren. He is survived by son, Bill Veitch (Jill); and daughter, Gwen Jackson (Charley); five grandchildren, Daniel Jackson (Stacie), Anna Veitch (Scott), Matt Veitch, Drew Jackson and Jack Veitch; great granddaughter, Jian Ying Jackson; brother, Elson Clay “Buddy” Veitch (Mildred), brother in law, Dan “Dude” Murchison (Judy), sister in law, Willetta “Baby Girl” Murchison Kerner (George) and hosts of nephews and nieces and many special friends. Sonny lived all his life in Raimund Heights, Bessemer, AL. Sonny graduated in 1948 from McAdory High School. He played Guard for the McAdory Yellow Jackets football team and was the fastest player on the team. Sonny was a machinist by trade. He worked two jobs: by day at The Birmingham News and the other by night at Veitch’s Machine Shop in Fairfield. Sonny loved fishing and was an avid Alabama football fan. He also had a passion for cars. You could see him in his later years at car shows with his red convertible Miata or his 1973 Rolls Royce. At the time of his death, he was working on rebuilding his 1929 convertible Mercedes. Sonny was a long time member of Jonesboro United Methodist Church, and when it merged with Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, he quickly became an active and popular member. He was a member of the Open Circle Sunday School Class and had a permanent reservation on the third pew. Sonny never met a stranger. He loved life. We are assured that he has met all of the angels in heaven by now! Visitation will be Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 4809 Bell Hill Road, Bessemer, AL 35022 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon, with the funeral to follow immediately and then burial at Valhalla Cemetery. Bro. Alan Head will be officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. The family appreciates the care provided by St. Vincent’s Hospital Compassion Care. Finally, words cannot express how thankful the family is to Linda Bussey, his friend and caregiver for the last five (5) years. Her compassion and patience will never be forgotten. We all love her very much!
