Nadine Y. Gordon

Nadine Y. Gordon, age 82, of Tuscaloosa, AL, formerly of Hueytown passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Horace G. Gordon; her sister, Margie Hogan, and her granddaughter, Anna Gordon. She is survived by her children, Stephen Gordon and Chris Gordon; her grandchildren, Victoria Gordon, and her siblings, Jean Jones, Ann Carroll and Edward Yeager. She was born May 30, 1931 in Cullman Co. Alabama where she grew up and attended public schools, graduating in 1949 from Fairview High School. She was the first of her family to enter college at Howard College in Homewood, AL in the fall of 1949, graduating in 1953 with a degree in Elementary Education. Following college, she moved to CA to do summer home-mission work for the Southern Baptist Convention where she met Horace G. Gordon, also a home-mission worker, and they were married on January 27, 1955. They soon located in Hueytown, AL where he served as Director of Music for Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and she became an Elementary Reading Specialist and teacher of first or second grades at Hueytown Elementary School for many years. They raised their family in Hueytown where they had two children. She worked and continued her education, receiving additional degrees from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Her teaching career included several shorter appointments with other Birmingham area schools before she retired. Throughout her life she was active in several area Baptist Churches, including: Second Baptist Church in Bessemer, AL, The Baptist Church of the Covenant and Southside Baptist Church, both in Birmingham, and finally Calvary Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa. She taught children's Sunday school classes for most all of those years, eventually teaching "Conversational English" to foreign students attending UAB through the Southside Baptist Church. In retirement, they relocated to Tuscaloosa to be near family, moving to the Capstone Village community associated with the University of Alabama. She passed away from the debilitating effects of a brain tumor on Christmas Day. She was loving, caring, and active in the lives of the people who surrounded her wherever she found herself. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home with burial in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Anna E. Gordon Memorial Endowed Scholarship, P.O.
