Paul S. Lampkin, Jr.

Paul S. Lampkin, Jr. was born in Bessemer, Alabama on November 28, 1925 to Amelia Phillipina Frances Weller Lampkin and Paul S. Lampkin, Sr. In 1951 he married the love of his life, Jacquelyn McElroy Lampkin. On July 14, 2020 they were married 69 years. From this union they had one daughter, Paula Frances Lampkin. Paul attended St. Aloysius School and Bessemer High School. Later attending St. Bernard College, the University of Alabama and Auburn University where he majored in chemical engineering. He was a veteran of World War II and a lieutenant in the Korean War. As a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne he fought many maneuvers on the ground in Germany. Afterwards he liberated the concentration camps of Dachau and the sub camp at Landsberg. Later he was involved with the Nuremberg trials. His career took him to many countries throughout the world as a consultant with D & L and in upper management as superintendent of Coke and Coal Chemicals with US Steel Corporation. In his community he served for years on the Bessemer Board of Education. During this interim as president of the board. Descended from European Aristocracy and landed gentry of Angle Norman and German descent with the surnames of de Skelton, Del la pole, Seville, de Gastoney, de Stanley, de Bankheid (aka Bankhead), de Lambzkynus, de Holles, von Schuck and de Fussner. Paul’s fathers lineage included Thomas de Halliday, a gentleman who served on the Board of the East India Tea Company with his relative, chairman of the board, Sir Leonard de Halliday, Lord Mayor of London, and Sir Michael de Hardy of Wetwang East Riding Yorkshire whose father, John de Hardy, Alderman and Lord Mayor of London founded the Haberdashers Company of London England. Not only were his ancestors Magna Carta Barron’s, but, Revolutionary War heroes and founders of this country and the State of Alabama. The Bankhead family were tobacco Barron’s of Carolina and cotton kings in Alabama they were political icons in Washington D.C. His cousin Tallulah Bankhead worked feverishly in Washington on the Anti Lynching laws. Harriet Bankhead Brown, sister to senator John Hollis Bankhead, doted on her grandson. As did his grandfather, William Perry Lampkin, his grandmother, Marian Philippina Fussner Weller loved him dearly, educating him in the Catholic faith. At an early age he was confirmed in the Catholic faith. He served as an Alter Boy and sang in the choir. Having been taught music by the nuns he was an accomplished musician mastering Chopin at a young age. As alter boy he traveled with Bishop Joe Drunick in the surrounding area of Bibb County. Paul Lampkin is preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Paul S. Lampkin, Sr; Philippa Williams (who was not his biological sister nor adopted); his mother and father in law, Eulalia Copeland McElroy and Rowan McElroy; his brother in law, Dr. T.R. McElroy; his sister in law, Carolyn McElroy Christopher and his brother in law, Dr. A.M. Christopher. He is survived by his loving wife, Jacquelyn McElroy Lampkin; his daughter, who he dearly loved, Paula Frances Lampkin and his beloved four legged daughter, companion, caregiver and best friend, Missy Carter. His family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1460 Pearson Avenue SW, Birmingham, AL 35211. Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Graveside service with military honors will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Father Jim Booth will be officiating the service.
