Ronald C. McCoy, M.D., J.D.

McCoy, M.D., J.D., Ronald C., age 68, passed away at Brookwood Hospital Sunday, November 11, 2012, after a long hard battle with colon cancer. He fought hard to beat this dreaded disease. Ron encourages you to get you colonoscopy if you haven't had one. He was born November 7, 1944 in Bessemer, Alabama. Ron was a loving husband, step-father, grandfather, "Papa Ron". He was a loving and kind Ear, Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Surgeon in Bessemer and Birmingham, Alabama. He loved and cherished each and every patient. He treated each patient as his own family. He graduated from Hueytown High School in 1963, and was a graduate of the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Ron trained at the University of Alabama, School of Medicine. He did his training at the University Hospital, and was Chief resident in 1975. He trained under Dr. James Hicks and Dr. Julius Hicks, specializing in Ear, Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Surgery. Ron was board certified in Otolaryngology in 1976. He practiced medicine for 36 years in Bessemer, Alabama. Ron was on staff at South Highlands Hospital, Bessemer Carraway Hospital, now Medical West, Healthsouth, now U.A.B Highlands, Trinity Hospital, and Brookwood Hospital. He had the privilege of serving on the Executive Committee at South Highlands Hospital, Healthsouth Hospital, Chairman of Ethics Committee, Past President of Staff at South Highlands and Healthsouth Hospital. Ron had the privilege of seeing the first patient in the emergency room at the opening of Brookwood Hospital in 1972. Ron attended Birmingham School of Law, graduating in 1996. He passed the Alabama State Bar in 1997. Ron was an avid reader, having read his Bible through five times. He enjoyed being with his friends from both medical school and law school. Ron loved to sing Elvis, with his friends, garden and fish. Ron was a member of the State of Alabama Medical Association, Jefferson County Medical Society, Alabama and Birmingham Society of Otolaryngologist, American Medical Association, Alabama State Bar Association, Birmingham Bar Association, American Bar Association, The Club and Poinsettia Men’s Club. Ron was a man of honor and integrity. He loved and cared for his patients. Thank you all for your many prayers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Carl and Gertrude Reaves McCoy; his brother, Chester C. McCoy, Jr. Ron is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Peggy S. McCoy; his step daughter, Connie Wambo; his step son, Charlie (Candice) Miller; three grandchildren, Jonnica and Drake Miller, and Courtney Hudson; three great grandchildren, Jada, Dayton and Kyla Hudson; his sister-in-law, Pauline Cossey; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends that loved him. Peggy McCoy, on behalf of her precious husband wants to thank his oncologist, Dr. Jimmie Harvey and his staff at Trinity Hospital for the loving care given to Ron, Thanks to Dr. Peter Lodewick, Dr. Luis Pineda, his special friends, Dr. John Issis, Dr. Justin Moellinger, Dr. David Denny, Dr. Sadri Avsar, Dr. Michael Rosemore and all of his medical colleagues. Special thanks to Mr. Edward L. Hardin, Jr., Curtis Gordon, Jr., and John Clement for their kind friendship. Pallbearers will be, Charles Miller, Gregory Cox, Tyronne Whitt, Willie Moses, Edward Peterson, M.D., Cleophus Smith, John Clement, Charles Browning, Dana Beaupre and Bruce Connell. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home, 1300 4th Avenue N., Bessemer, AL, 35020 with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery, Fairfield, AL. Bro. Jerry Johnson will be officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 14, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
