Walter Colquitt Dockery

WALTER COLQUITT DOCKERY, age 90, peacefully passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2016. Born on October I l, 1925, to John and Flora Dockery, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Ann Davis Dockery. He is survived by one daughter, Peggy Ann Dockery Hubbell (Gerard) of Winter Haven, Florida. He was a World War II Veteran who served his country in the United States Navy. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Bessemer where he worked as an engineer for Birmingham Southern Railroad until his retirement in 1990. He and his late wife, Ann, were faithful members of Second Baptist Church for 44 years, where he also served as a Deacon. They moved their membership in later years to Eastern Valley Baptist Church and attended as long as their health allowed. Mr. Dockery enjoyed being surrounded by "The Davis Girls" who lovingly cared for him and Ann until their deaths. He is survived by his five sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Mary Reynolds (Corder); Stacy Cushing (Jerry); Carolyn Tramell (Barney — deceased); Kathleen Hereford (Charles — deceased); and Louise Bunn (Morris — deceased). He loved his large family and they were always there for him. His thirty nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews loved and respected him and they all will miss the patriarch of our large family. We were blessed to have him for 90 years — a man who lived by faith and set a Christian example of living honorably, humbly and by loving us unconditionally. Pallbearers serving are James V. Spencer, Ill, Ray Johnson, Buddy Bunn, David Bunn, Luke Perry and Drew Cushing. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home, Saturday, July 16, 2016. The service will be officiated at 11 a.m. by the Reverend Jimmy Bradford of Eastern Valley Baptist Church. Interment at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Hoover will include a full military honor service as he is laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Ann. The family wishes to thank Dr. John Farley and his staff at Birmingham Internal Medicine Associates for the care and concern they provided to him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Eastern Valley Baptist Church, 1216 Potter Avenue, Bessemer, Alabama 35020.
