Billy Joe Hayes

December 27, 1928 - February 7, 2019

Billy Joe Hayes entered the Gates of Heaven at noon February 7, 2019. The second born of mother Maureen (Horton) Hayes and Cecil Hayes in Calera, AL, December 27, 1928, he lived a great and happy life always living for God and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Bill always remained transparent in his faith in Jesus and let everyone know it. "I Love the Lord," he would often express to all those who surrounded him. Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy Cochran Hayes and his son, Gary Wayne Hayes. He is survived by his daughter, Tina Long (Steven); his daughter in law, Lisa Hayes; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren (who called him "Ole 'Pa") and several nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved. Bill was retired U.S. Navy with 22 years of shipboard and aviation military service in the Korean War and later the Vietnam War era where he earned several commendations and awards. During his military career Bill was lovingly referred to as "Sea Bat." Upon retiring from the Navy, Bill went on to work for Buffalo Rock - Pepsi for an additional 20+ years before retiring (again). Being productive, hard-working, loving and always cheerful was his trademark. Bill always used his God-given talents to the fullest measure. Bill was an ordained Deacon and leader of his church for many years at Westside Baptist in Bessemer, AL, then merging into the Baptist Church at McAdory, Bill remained faithful to the Gospel, the community, the church, and most of all God's commands. Bill was also a long time member of Gideons International where he continued to reach countless souls. Bill was a giving man. He gave unto the Lord; he gave unto others. Bill will be sorely missed for many years to come. Funeral service will be Monday, February 11, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at The Baptist Church at McAdory. Burial to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church.
