Joy Raine, of Hoover, AL passed away peacefully surrounded by family at home on August 4, 2020, at the age of 93. She was born in Bessemer, AL and graduated from Bessemer High School. She attended St. Mary of the Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana and the University of Alabama, and was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. She was preceded in death by her mother, Angelina Romano Raine; her father, Sam Raine; her brother, Sam Raine, Jr., and her grandson, Robert B. Keith, Jr. Joy is survived by her husband, Royce Thrash and her sister-in-law, Antoinette Raine. She is also survived by her seven children: Angela Maples Kuhlman, Sam Maples (Rita), Nancy Maples Callahan (James), Valerie Maples, Marsha Maples King (Robbie), Brian Maples, Joy Maples (Jr.) Ledvina (Martin); her grandchildren: Deborah Keith, Julie Kuhlman, Margo Maples, Natalea Riley, Spence Maples, Luke Maples, David Bradford (Katie), Sammy Bradford, Jordan Bradford (Jenny), Alek Ledvina, Marek Ledvina, Marek Ledvina, Erik Ledvina, and her nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Joy was a 1st generation Sicilian-American and very proud of her heritage and was a devout Roman Catholic who cherished her family and her Catholic upbringing. She was very active as a parish member of St. Aloysius and Prince of Peace Catholic Churches. Joy loved her parents, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Joy loved family occasions during the years and specifically during the holidays and always remembered everyone's birthday, including her own. Joy loved to travel, especially to California, Hawaii, Italy, and Australia. Joy was a beautiful, vivacious lady and all will greatly miss her. Her can-do attitude inspired many along her life's journey. She instilled confidence, independence, and determination in all her children. Her moto was, "The Lord helps those who help themselves." And she never passed up a good deal, especially when she was on the Price Is Right. Services will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church on August 11, 2020. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. with Mass at 11:00 a.m. The burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Bessemer, AL. Please wear a mask. If you desire, the family requests you send flowers or make any donations to Prince of Peace Catholic Church in remembrance of Joy Raine.
