Marjorie Ruth Overstreet Lawrence
February 26, 1933 - June 6, 2022
Marjorie Ruth Overstreet Lawrence died peacefully in her home in Bessemer, Alabama on the morning of June 6, 2022. She was 89. She was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, JC and many beloved family members. She is survived by daughters, Delores and Donnetta; grandchildren, Jack (Marie), Felicia (Eddie), Sharon (Joe), Jim (Melinda), Chuck, Dora (Russ), John (Janet), Nanette, Justin (Amanda), Brandon (Sarah); and numerous great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Cooking and baking for people was how she showed love. She has given recipes and meals to just about everyone who walked into her home or life, but she didn't just meet people. She adopted them. Many people besides her children and grandchildren called her "Othermama," and once she decided someone was family, she took care of them, whether that looked like baking a cake, making a phone call, or adding to her daily prayers. Marjorie and JC owned a place on the Black Warrior River for years, where, on any given weekend, dozens of her people could be found jumping from the pier, riding in the boat, and eating Othermama's food. She did not know how to cook for a few people, but she was an expert in cooking for a large crowd. She also had a love for all things Christmas. She was happiest when celebrating, surrounded by as many loved ones as could fit under her roof, with her perfectly-decorated Christmas tree that just barely fit into the house. There was not a corner of her home left untouched by Christmas spirit. Marjorie was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, but often loved attending Pleasant Grove Church of the Nazarene with her family. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 8, 2022 from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. at Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Fairfield, Alabama on June 8, 2022 at 2:00 pm. with Bro. Alan Head officiating the service.
