Joanna Ruth Glasgow Camp

Joanna Ruth Glasgow Camp was born July 2, 1952 and passed from this earth surrounded by family on September 15, 2024. Joanna loved the Lord, constantly studied the Word, and freely and boldly shared her Christian faith. Her family was the very center of her life. She loved John, her husband of 37 years, with all her heart and was fiercely proud of her beloved children Erin and David. She adored her grandson Brennan and loved and happily welcomed into the family her son-in-law Jason and daughter-in-law Katie. Joanna held a Bachelor of Arts in Education from UAB, a Master’s in English from the University of Montevallo, and a Master’s in Library Science from the University of Alabama. She taught English at the middle and high school level in the Bessemer and Jefferson County school systems before becoming the librarian at Leeds Elementary School. Joanna had a life-long love for books and was extremely well-read. Her creative talents were many. She especially loved hand-sewing and paper art and often worked with vintage fabrics and random papers and objects collected from across the world. She was adventurous and had traveled extensively. As a young woman Joanna spent 6 weeks traveling alone in Great Britain, living and working in Christian hostels. She loved her travels with John and they always had the next fun trip planned. Joanna’s wonderful and quirky sense of humor was enjoyed by all who knew her. She was one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her beloved husband John David Camp, daughter Erin Courtney Camp Myrick (Jason), son David Hunter Camp (Katie), grandson Brennan Joshua Terrell, mother Margaret Jones Glasgow, sister Lynn Glasgow Smith (Buford), brother Kevin Glasgow (Debbie), nephews Brent Smith (Molly), Ryan Smith, Jarrod Glasgow (Mollie), Jordan Glasgow, niece Devin Carter (LeAlan), and many greatly-loved great-nieces and nephews. Joanna was predeceased by her father James William Glasgow, her mother-in-law Alva Kennamer Camp, and her father-in-law Leamon Presley Camp. The family would like to acknowledge the tireless efforts of the doctors and ICU nursing staff at UAB Medical West. They showed great compassion in caring for Joanna both physically and spiritually. We will be forever grateful. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024 at Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home, at 11:00 AM, with burial following at Macedonia South Crest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until service time. Bro. Johnny Glasgow will be officiating the service.
